The Names Of God Reveal Himself Through out the ages God would slowly reveal Himself more and more and more. In the Old Testament (or covenant) the main thing that God stressed about Himself the most was His holiness. God gave His people a covenant name by which to speak of him and call upon Him. The name Yahweh (“Jehovah,” “the LORD”). By this name God announced Himself as the “great I am”--the One who is completely and consistently Himself. He is: and it is because He is what He is that everything else is as it is. But in the New Testament (or covenant) things have changed. God reveals Himself as Father. Father has become His covenant name. This is a family covenant. Christians are His children, His own sons and daughters, His heirs. The surprising disclosure to the believer that God is his Father is the highest and most intense name the Creator has revealed to His creation. The names of God declare His character and attributes, such as, I AM WHO I AM! Elohim, meaning “God,” a reference to God’s power and might Gen. 1:1; Ps.19:1 Adonai, meaning “Lord,” a reference to the Lordship of God Mal. 1:6 Jehovah (sometimes spelled Yahweh), a reference to God’s divine salvation Gen. 2:4 Jehovah-Maccaddeshem, meaning, “The Lord thy sanctifier” Exod. 31:13 Jehovah-Rohi, meaning, “The Lord my shepherd” Ps. 23:1 Jehovah-Shammah, meaning, “The Lord who is present” Ezek. 48:35 Jehovah-Rapha, meaning, “The Lord our healer” Exod. 16:26 Jehovah-Tsidkenu, meaning, “The Lord our righteousness” Jer. 23:6 Jehovah-Jireh, meaning, “The Lord will provide” Gen. 22:13-14 Jehovah-Nissa, meaning, “The Lord our banner” Exod. 17:15 Jehovah-Shalom, meaning, “The Lord is peace” Judg. 6:24 Jehovah-Sabbaoth, meaning, “The Lord of Hosts” Is. 6:1-3 El-Elyon, meaning, “The most high God” Gen. 14:17-20; Isa. 14:13-14 El-Roi, meaning, “The strong one who sees” Gen. 16:12 El-Shaddai, meaning, “God almighty” or “The God of the mountains” Gen. 17:1; Ps. 91:1 El-Olam, meaning, “The everlasting God” Isa. 40:28-31
The names of God have even been added to people in the Bible!
A lot of people aren’t aware that when God gave or changed peoples names in the Bible He was imparting to that person a portion of His own name. For instance, take Abram and his wife Sarai. God, whose name is Jehovah took their names and changed them to Abraham and Sarah. The meaning of Sarah’s name was changed from, “Princess” to “Queen” and the meaning of Abraham’s name was changed from, “Exalted Father” to “Father of a Multitude.” God took a part of Himself and gave it to them. He has done that to so many others through out the Bible also. The names of God are significant. But check this out, this is even better. The word ‘Ab’ which means Father; forerunner; producer of a certain thing. It is a very simple word that is supposed to be one of the first words a baby can speak. The Aramaic form of ‘ab’ is ‘abba.’ It is the modern Hebrew word that Israeli children use for “daddy.” Jesus applied this toddler’s word to His divine Father in Mark 14:36 and the Holy Spirit teaches us to call God “abba” in Rom. 8:15. ‘Ab’ is also found in many different names through out the Bible. For example, ‘Abraham, “Father of a Multitude,” ‘Abimelech, “My Father Is King,” ‘Joab, “Yahweh Is a Father,” ‘Abshalom, “Father of Peace.” ‘Ab’ is also applied to the Lord Jesus who is ‘abi‘ad, in Isaiah 9:6, the “Everlasting Father,” or more literally, the “Father of Eternity.” The Old Covenant vs. The New Covenant. To be right with God the Judge is a great thing, but to be loved and cared for by God the Father is so much more greater!
