A lot of people are afraid of God and afraid of the Holy Ghost. I think everyone would agree that no one is afraid of Jesus.
This may be hard to accept, but the truth is Jesus IS God in the flesh and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus! So there's no reason to be afraid at all. To be filled with the Spirit, is to be filled with Jesus.
Another misunderstanding is that the Holy Spirit is a force or an it.
The Holy Ghost is a person.
God commands in His Word, "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit" (Eph. 4:30).
Grief & grieved means: to feel pain in body and mind. To suffer mental & physical anguish.
The Holy Spirit doesn't just hurt. Hurt operates at the level of the emotions. He grieves and that goes much deeper. You can't grieve a force or an it.
God also tells us in His Word, "Do not quench the Spirit" (I Thess. 5:19).
Quench means: to put out. You can stop a person and that is what the Holy Spirit is.
The Bible also says that the Holy Ghost can be vexed (Is. 63:10). Vex means: to afflict or torment. Only a person can become the target of torment.

O' that we were so controlled by the Holy Spirit in thought, word and deed!
This page is divided into mainly three sections. (1). The mind (2). The mouth (3). The flesh.
The reason is because: The Holy Ghost cannot dwell in a vessel that is (1). thinking evil, (2). speaking evil,(3). doing evil!
Your Mind (Thoughts)
This is a very serious issue if you want a relationship with God. The Spirit of God is holy (Holy Ghost). We must not allow our mind to be a wilderness in which every kind of unclean beast roams and foul flies.
Our thoughts are the decorations inside the sanctuary where we live. Evil thoughts will come but we're not supposed to entertain those evil thoughts. We are told to cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. To take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ (II Cor. 10:5).
When you realize that ...the Lord searches all hearts and understands all imaginations of the thoughts (I Chr. 28:9).
Then you'll understand what Rom. 12:2 is talking about when it says, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind... and the only way that you can renew your mind is with the Word of God.
You have to get in the Word and get the Word in you.
If your mind is not renewed with the Word of God, it will side in with your flesh and dominate your spirit (the real you). But if you get your mind renewed, your spirit, through your mind, will dominate your body, which is are next subject.
Your Body (Flesh) Your earth-suit is the temple of the Holy Ghost. We live in a world where everyone is body-conscious. We need to become spirit-conscious. A lot of Christians are carnal-Christians, (what the world calls a hypocrite) or body-ruled. We have to rule our bodies and not let them dominate us.
You are a spirit being living in a body and the Word of God says, walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another...(Gal. 5:16,17).
A carnal-Christian is basically someone who is governed by their physical senses. Rom. 8:4,5) ...do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
The Bible is spirit food. When you feed your spirit on the Word of God, your spirit (the real you) will begin to grow. I Pet. 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow... Carnal-Christians feed their bodies three hot meals a day and their spirits one cold snack a week.
Your Mouth (Tongue) You can always locate a person spiritually by what comes out of their mouth. The Bible says …out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matt. 12:34). Just by listening to a person talk, you can tell what their full of, and I mean that in a reverent way. Try it sometime. Just listen.
You’ll hear people filled with sports, hatred of their spouse, the six o’clock news, can’t wait until Friday to get drunk, etc. Prov. 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue and verses 7,8 talk about a fool’s mouth is his destruction, his lips are a snare to his soul, gossip or slander goes down deep into the soul. This is some serious stuff.
Jesus said, “we would be judged by every idle word.” James talks about us blessing God and cursing men with the same tongue. In James 3:8 it says that no man can tame the tongue, which brings me to this. I believe and I bet I’m right …the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues… Acts 19:6. The Holy Spirit CAN tame the tongue! We need a dose of the Holy Ghost!
